The Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was started and made popular by St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. This was a favorite prayer of St. Padre Pio and he prayed it every day.

"Let us remember that the Heart of Jesus has called us not only for our own sanctification, but also for that of other souls. He wants to be helped in the salvation of souls" -- St. Padre Pio

This novena (repeating the same prayer for nine consecutive days for a particular intention or devotion) can be prayed at any time, though it is a tradition to begin on the traditional feast of Corpus Christi (Thursday after Trinity Sunday) leading up to the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus itself it is a tradition to pray the Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart.
